Well? I think its safe to say that on first impressions Lady Moon is rooted squarely in the 'goth' camp of things and, upon listening, those first impressions are proved entirely right. And, luckily for Lady Moon, I get this bizarre longing for more goth in my life at this time of year which makes it the perfect time to review it!
Combining what sounds like Magenta from the Rocky Horror Picture Show style vocals with a faint industrial / 80's goth musical back drop, Lady Moon sound more like an eerie movie soundtrack than actual 'songs' in the traditional sense of the word. Which, I should point out, is a great thing as far as I'm concerned. And each song seems to come complete with its own mini story, from evil incarnate to Anne Rice style vampires, in a way in which Iron Maiden are very fond of doing.
The music itself, with the exception of the odd widdly bits in between vocals, is very understated and minimal - think Floodland era Sisters of Mercy type sound with some Sonic Youth effects chucked in for good measure. As with most low budget recordings, there's no way of knowing if it was intentional to keep the instruments squarely in the background, or if that's just the way the mix ended up sounding, but on the assumption it was intentional then a more prominent overall beat to the songs wouldn't go amiss.
Overall, some excellent tracks from Lady Moon, and well worth checking out. The only downside is that it is very 'correct time and place' music - great for a rainy night in, but you certainly wouldn't want to listen to it during a BBQ or anything!
