SPIT LIKE THIS

How damn good are Spit Like This? A perfectly balanced blend of great songs, great image and and a work ethic (and commercial mind!) that blows most other bands out of the water, Spit Like This's brand of 'Horror Glam Punk Rock' is just what we need to shake away those wintertime blues.

We caught up with Lord Zion recently to get all the latest news & happenings from SLT, which can be read in our Voltcase interview just below this gunk. And for more on Spit Like This, check them out here!

VOLTCASE SPIT LIKE THIS INTERVIEW:

Hey hey! Welcome to the almighty Voltcase, how are things!?
Any things in particular?! Well, hello to you and hello to all your readers. Things are as expected: fabulous!

So, how would you describe your sound in three words - which kind of knackers your 'Horror Glam Punk Rock' description a bit, doesn't it?
Well, that’s just mean! I guess it means we have to lose a word.. In that case, let’s get rid of Rock. We do rock - hard - but we have a very strong Punk ethic. I’m talking about the true spirit of Punk, before it became the watered down nonsense it is now! So, Horror Glam Punk then. I like it!

I've just read through the long version of your biography, and I didn't realise that selling panties on Ebay was such a lucrative business. Have you ever thought about just chucking in the whole music thing and concentrating on pantie selling instead? Lets be fair, you could sell anyone's panties, who would know!?
Well, it would be extremely lucrative if eBay let you do it! This was several years ago, eBay was not the massively huge thing it is now, so you could get away with a bit more. The trick was a short listing. However much fun it was though, it was a means to an end rather than a dream-cum-true!

It was a very strange time in our lives though – many of our customers would request special extras. Of course, we made them pay for it! Our best ever was $100 for a pair of panties, pissed on with extra bonus piss in little baggies to be sent with it. Vikki didn't fancy doing all the pissing so I dutifully did it. Bunged them in the bath and just pissed all over them. Packaged everything off and sent it along. This was weeks after 9/11 and they were going to New York so you KNOW that customs would have opened them! But, they made their destination as the customer mailed saying that he spurted as soon as he opened them.

We aim to please.

And while were on the subject of selling stuff for cash, I had no idea you guys where behind the Smell Your Mum range. Do a lot of people make the connection between the band and the brand, as it were? And, as were talking about 'Smell Your Mum', have you got any all time favourite slogans or sayings that you've printed?
A lot of people do make the connection, yes. After all, we don’t exactly keep it quiet! There are links to our site on the smellyourmum.com website and often in the t-shirt descriptions I talk about the band.

You see, we started smellyourmum.com to basically fund the band and to provide me and Vikki with enough money to live off. We didn’t think it would work but, you know what, it did! It was always a zero compromise endeavor – printing the foulest tees we could and also being run by us. It remains that to this day. It’s all just part of the SPiT LiKE THiS Universe. When you get into SLT, you are buying into a whole lifestyle and view-point, not just a band.

As for my favourite slogan, well, it has to be “I’m With Cuntface” with a pointing hand – a take on the old “I’m With Stupid”. Makes me laugh every time I see it. We now have about 400 slogans though, so it is hard to choose!

You seem to have played with a load of cool bands such as long-time Voltcase favourites The Misfits and The Damned. Have any of them turned out to be really cool in person as well or, on the other hand, have any of them just turned out to be a bunch of wankers?
This business is littered with wankers – and many would put us amongst them! – so I’d rather not dwell on that and give them more publicity. I am more than happy to talk about those that were really cool.

Absolutely, without a shadow of doubt, the coolest dudes to play with were The Misfits. We figured that they’d pretty much ignore our existance (like most big bands tend to, the wankers) but we were totally wrong. Jerry came over and introduced himself and then proceeded to give Vikki several packs of his bass strings. He then offered to put a set on for Vikki so he re-strung her bass and showed her a cool way to break the strings in. We then just kind of hung out with them all evening. And it wasn’t just Jerry, the whole Misfits crew are like one big family and, for one night only, you feel like part of that family.

We’ve stayed in touch with Jerry and co, sending them all SLT T-shirts for Christmas so, with any luck, that won’t be the last time we play with them!

So what's the deal with the record label at the moment? Is there one in the pipeline, or are you just too damn indie for that kind of thing?
At the moment, we are unsigned. We do have some distributed releases, some EP’s and a Compilation CD, which people can get from HMV, Amazon etc. We spent the summer recording our debut album, using our own cash. Our intention now is to find the right label to license the album to. That way, we retain the Rights to it and get a higher royalty rate.

There are many bands that are avoiding labels all together and, to an extent, I see the logic. But, at the end of the day, a decent label has the experience to take our music to places that we would find almost impossible to get to by ourselves.

So, we are talking with a few labels at the moment. One in particular we are keen on! We are also talking to labels in different territories so we expect to be signing deals and getting the new record out there in 2008.

What was working with Paul Tipler like? Did the recordings sound as good as you thought they would?
Paul Tipler – for those that don’t know – is the producer responsible for the debut albums of bands like 80’s Matchbox, Stereophonics, Idelwild and many more. We chose him because, for him, it was all about passion. And we liked that. We didn’t want to sound sterile like so many bands do these days. I listen to the results and I know we made the right choice in him.

As for him personally, well, he’s a tough guy to get to know. But then I think we’re pretty odd and quite unlike anyone he has worked with before, so I am sure the feeling is mutual! We spent a total of 36 days in the studio with him during which time we most definitely all bonded. We became a bit Northern and he became a bit Camp!

He is an amazing producer though and I would happily recommend him to all! Oh, and the results sound way better than expected.

Voltcase readers tend to be very open minded and very difficult to shock, can you say tell us anything about yourself that would shock even the most hardcore of Voltcase reader?
Well, we’re not really here to try and shock people on purpose – that seems a bit contrived. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. To some people, we are the Devils in Disguise! Evil people, probably Satanists, who look funny, dress funny and do strange things. To others, we are wannabies.

We got told we “weren’t Goth enough” at a recent gig – whateverthehell THAT means! Stupid thing is, I bet the guy that said that lives a pretty suburban lifestyle and is a weekend Goth. I’m not saying we are Goth or anything, but me and Vikki do drive around in a hearse and live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by bats, next to a graveyard!

Why should the the lazy general public make the effort to check you out, and what are your plans for the future?
I don’t think the general public WOULD check us out. The General Public seems to need to be force-fed their entertainment through shows like X-Factor, and we ain’t going on that any time soon.

However, I would recommend that your readers check us out because, with all the fakery around at the moment, they can rest assured that we are 100% genuine. OK, they might not like what we do, or some of what we do, but at least it is honest. We aren’t trying to be the next anyone, we are just trying to be the first SPiT LiKE THiS. And I am proud of that. You could cut me in half and find SPiT LiKE THiS down my middle! I live and breathe this band and this life.

And finally..... what does the word 'Voltcase' mean to you?
I think it is some kind of Vibrator reference. If it isn’t, it should be.
